Colonel Lutz currently serves as the Land Domain Lead for the Joint Staff Robotic
and Autonomous Systems Team.
Colonel Lutz graduated from Norwich University and was commissioned in 1993.
After completing The Basic School and the Ground Supply Officers’ Course, he was assigned to
3d Support Battalion, 3d Force Service Support Group as the Battalion Supply Officer. In 1997, Colonel Lutz was reassigned to Marine Expeditionary Unit Service Support Group 31
as the Supply Detachment Commander.
From 1998-2000, Colonel Lutz served with the Field Supply and Maintenance
Analysis Office 1 as a Supply Analyst.
After completing the US Army Combined Logistics Captains Career Course in 2001, Colonel Lutz was assigned to 3d Marine Aircraft Wing. From 2001-2003, he served as the G-4
Plans Officer and G-4 Operations Officer. During this tour of duty, Colonel Lutz
deployed in support of Operations ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM. In 2003, Colonel Lutz was assigned to Marine Wing Support Group 37, 3d Marine Aircraft
Wing as the Assistant Operations Officer, and in 2004, he deployed to Iraq in support of
Operation IRAQI FREEDOM as the Marine Wing Support Group 37 (Forward) Operations
Officer.
From 2004-2005, Colonel Lutz served as the Commandant of the Marine Corps
National Fellow at the US Agency for International Development (Office of Foreign Disaster
Assistance). Following this assignment, he attended the School of Advanced Warfighting.
From 2006-2008, Colonel Lutz was assigned to US Marine Corps Forces, Korea as
the Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff for Plans.
In 2008, Colonel Lutz was assigned to I Marine Expeditionary Force as the Force
Ground Supply Officer. During this assignment, he also deployed to Iraq to serve with Multi-
National Force – Iraq, Plans, Policy, and Assessments Directorate, as a Plans Team Chief in
support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. Upon returning to I Marine Expeditionary Force, Colonel Lutz served as the Deputy Assistant Chief of Staff for Logistics.
In 2010, Colonel Lutz assumed command of Combat Logistics Battalion 3 and
deployed the battalion to Afghanistan in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM. After
completing his command tour in 2012, Colonel Lutz attended the Eisenhower School
at National Defense University, graduating with distinction in 2013.
After graduation, Colonel Lutz assumed his current duties as the Land/SOF Branch
Chief within the Force Application Division, J8, The Joint Staff.
Colonel Lutz holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and International Studies
from Norwich University, a Master of Arts degree in Operational Studies from Marine Corps
University, and a Master of Science degree in National Resource Strategy from National Defense University.
