Paramount Pictures has set a May 19, 2017, release date for Dwayne Johnson’s “Baywatch,” replacing “Terminator 2” — which has been dropped from the schedule.
“Terminator: Genisys,” the franchise’s reboot starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Clarke and Emilia Clarke,” grossed only $89 million domestically last summer before slightly rebounding overseas to $350 million. It was also a misfire with critics, scoring a weak 26% fresh rating on RottenTomatoes.
Skydance, which co-financed “Terminator: Genisys,” had originally planned a new trilogy with Paramount but said in October were “re-adjusting” after the disappointing ticket sales.
Paramount announced in 2014 that it had the dated “Terminator 2” for May 19, 2017, and “Terminator 3” on June 29, 2018. Under copyright rules, North American rights to The Terminator franchise would revert back to creator James Cameron in 2019 — 35 years after the original “Terminator” was released.
As for “Baywatch,” Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Kelly Rohrbach and newcomer Ilfenesh Hadera are starring with Johnson in the movie reboot of the 1990s television show “Baywatch.” Seth Gordon is directing.
Johnson will also produce the movie with his partner Dany Garcia through their Seven Bucks Productions banner. Beau Flynn and Ivan Reitman are producing as well, along with Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz and Greg Bonann.

I liked the last movie, it wasn’t really a reboot, so much as a continuation. The changes were perfectly explained due to all the time travel and tampering. It wasn’t as good as the first 2, but it was fun.

They can’t find another date? There’s plenty on the calendar. Why not November and counter program against the Oscar bait? The last one didn’t do that well to say it needs summer business to do enough to make good. A lower budget more thrilling film would be better any way. The last one was as needless and heartless as Jurassic World and Force Awakens.

It’s not as simple as pushing it six months back. Relating to production budget, the movie may have made the studio just a few million dollars in profit when taking into account gross retention percentage from domestic and international territories. Does a mere few million dollars in profit sound exciting when your production budget was over 150 million dollars, when domestic retention only accounts for 30% of your total retention, when it doesn’t take into account marketing expenses? Then there’s the question of did this really entice people to want to see what happens next? If they had kept their current story plan, a change in date probably wouldn’t make a difference because no one seems to care what happens next in this particular storyline regardless of release date.

It’s too bad, I loved it and my 11 year old son has just recently started watching the movies and loved it as well. Too bad
you really need to raise the bar for your sake and your son’s-watch the the original movies-they are good-good acting, great story-the new one was a HUGE mess
I actually liked Terminator Genisys. I thought it paid respect to the amazing original and its terrific sequel but also finally moved the storyline forward. I was intrigued by the multiple storylines idea and the future hinted at by Matt Smith’s character. I am sorry to hear the sequels to this new storyline have been pulled for now. I felt they were on the right track to reinvigorating the franchise.
I actually enjoyed it quite a bit, too. I thought it was the best one since T2. I have no idea what people were expecting.
they were expecting a coherent plot that didn’t violate the rules set forth in the others, good acting (man, those leads were wooden!!) and some elemnt of fun-it was dry and slow and embarrassing

its probably for the best. i liked the idea they were going for but the execution was subpar at best, imo. wait for the rights to go back to cameron, then do it properly.
If Cameron gets it back, we’ll never see it. He’s too busy in the world of Crapatar.
Whomever thought it was a brilliant idea to put the biggest spoiler of the movie into the trailer needs to be fired. If I hadn’t seen that, i would have gone to see it in theatres. I dont know if I would have changed my mind about the movie overall though having just read reviews, plot summaries etc online now.

Smart. This series has more than run its course. However, much like Mad Max, I suspect that someday in the future it will be back. We can only hope it is anywhere near as good or successful as the MM reboot.
This a stab to the heart. So cruel, Paramount.
Of course McNary has his figures wrong; Terminator did $440 million on a $155 million budget which isn’t bad. But since Star Wars came out and did a billion dollars, everything else is a disappointment.
Damn these side liners who sit around and dream up figures. They probably wouldn’t know how to make a movie themselves so they just throw tomatoes at everything.
$89 million domestic plus $350 million overseas equals about $440 million. Those figures look about right to me.
Keeping in mind that most of the money was made overseas (meaning less of it gets back to the studio), as well as the fact that the budget doesn’t account for the big marketing costs this film presumably had (the ads were everwhere for this movie), this movie probably just barely broke even. Not enough to justify financing a costly sequel, especially since there was such a wide negative reaction (meaning that the potential audience for a sequel is even smaller).
And most analysts recognized this movie as a financial disappointment well before Force Awakens came out.
What do you expect when you can’t cast a simple movie like this correctly? Could have been great.
